Following Lumina Tech’s successful participation in Connect Dacorum’s Employability Days for schools last year, we were keen to repeat the experience; this year we chose to help out at Longdean School in Hemel Hempstead.
Over a period of two weeks our MD, Richard McBarnet, spent two mornings with 14 and 15 year olds, teaching them how to write their CV, as well as helping them prepare for, and practice, job interviews.
Richard got excellent feedback from the sessions which the children found engaging and informative. “Over the years I have been disappointed with the lack of preparation candidates have had on coming to interview for us. It seems all too common that schools are not preparing their pupils for what is required of them when applying for a job. I strongly feel that, as business leaders and local employers, we need to make a contribution to help the next generation prepare for employment. That’s why I was very keen to participate in Connect Dacorum’s local Employability Days scheme.”
Connect Dacorum have been organising employability days for the last three years and each year new schools are added to the list of participants – this year, the schools taking part were Cavendish, Longdean and Hemel Hempstead.
The sessions gave Richard, and other employers, the chance to gain a valuable insight into their aspirations and perceptions of the modern workplace, as well as giving them advice which will lead to an increased chance that they’ll achieve their goals.
Dacorum will be running further Employability Days at Hemel Hempstead School on Tuesday the 5th and Wednesday the 6th of July, and are looking for volunteers from the business world to help out. As Richard said: “I truly believe that we need to be better at preparing the next generation of school leavers for the rigours of employment and would encourage local businesses to get involved.”
