This is always a fun question because it usually gets IT people hot and bothered! If you ask the question on online forums, you will get so many different answers, you will be just as much in the dark about the answer as you were before you asked.
While everyone will have their own favourite antivirus (people can be very strong-willed about their least favourite ones too), most of the top vendors are on a par with each other, so the one you choose to use often comes down to personal preference.
The Magic Quadrant
The global research and advisory company Gartner frequently produces a ‘Magic Quadrant’ for technology products, which provides a useful comparison of the products and players in the major IT markets. Using ‘Ability to Execute’ on one axis, with ‘Completeness of Vision’ on the other, the quadrant positions show who the Leaders, Challengers, Niche Players and Visionaries are.
As far as we are concerned, the Leaders are the only companies we are interested in. In Gartner’s latest quadrant investigating antivirus software, the leading antivirus software packages are produced by Symantec, Trend Micro, Sophos, Intel Security and Kaspersky Lab.
How do we decide which package to use?
In the past we have used both Symantec and Trend Micro. Symantec have been our corporate mainstay – when we first formed Lumina Technologies, we used it for many years. However, there was a point when we changed to Trend Micro, not because of the protection it offered our clients, but because the package model they were offering us was better. Symantec then changed their model and a few years later we switched back because we felt the company had a more mature outlook.
Overall, we are emotionally impartial about the antivirus software systems we use, choosing the platform that allows us to best secure and protect our clients’ systems, and will regularly research the market to ensure our clients are always kept safe, whoever the provider is.
Our ideal antivirus supplier
Once we know the product will work, what we need to know about an antivirus software supplier is how their laboratory teams react to previously unseen outbreaks. We want a company that is willing to invest in security and has a pro-active team that will respond quickly if necessary, and do whatever it takes to keep the client safe.
